florida seeks the death penalty in the murder of nine-year-old jamaria sessions.5711

Florida is now seeking the death penalty in a child abuse case so horrifying that it has left an entire state asking how a little girl could suffer so long without being saved.

The murder of nine-year-old Jamaria Sessions is not just a criminal case.

It is a story of warnings ignored, systems that failed, and a child whose pain was visible long before her life was taken.

Jamaria’s death on June 17, 2023, in Lake County, Florida, has become one of the most disturbing child abuse investigations the county has ever handled.

It is a case that forces an uncomfortable question into the open.

How does a child endure months of reported abuse, hospital visits, school concerns, and official complaints, and still remain trapped in danger?

Jamaria Sessions was the daughter of Tadrina Dort and LoJuan Session, parents who had separated but were attempting to co-parent.

After the separation, LoJuan Session entered a relationship with Tyshael Elise Martin, a woman who would later stand accused of unimaginable cruelty.

Martin and Session shared a child together, and Martin also had two daughters from a previous relationship.

Tadrina Dort shared Jamaria with LoJuan and had another daughter of her own, creating a blended family arrangement already strained by conflict.

As tensions grew, so did fear.

While Jamaria’s mother, Tadrina Dort, was battling leukemia and hospitalized, Jamaria and her younger sibling stayed with their grandmother, Althea Chenault.

Even from a hospital bed, Dort reportedly tried to protect her child.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Tadrina Dort attempted to file injunctions against Tyshael Martin for threats, harassment, and violence.

“Tadrina was in the hospital, and she was writing her on Facebook saying she hoped she died,” Chenault told Fox 35 Orlando.

Those messages were not vague.

They were warnings.

They were fear written plainly.

In September 2022, Tadrina Dort lost her battle with leukemia and died, leaving Jamaria without her mother and without her fiercest advocate.

Authorities say that after her mother’s death, the abuse escalated.

What had already been dangerous became relentless.

School officials began noticing something was wrong.

According to arrest records, Grassy Lake Elementary School requested a well-being check in December after Jamaria and other children were repeatedly absent.

An officer responded to the home, where the absences were explained away as grief following Jamaria’s mother’s death.

That explanation closed the door, at least temporarily.

That same month, the Florida Department of Children and Families received an anonymous call reporting abuse inside the home.

Officials later acknowledged concerns about how that call was handled and confirmed it became the subject of an administrative investigation.

Another warning.

Another opportunity.

Another failure.

Also in December, Jamaria was treated at a local hospital for severe dog bites.

For most children, a hospital visit like that would raise alarms that could not be ignored.

Yet Jamaria returned to the same environment.

Returned to the same home.

Returned to the same danger.

According to investigators, home surveillance video later captured one of the most chilling moments in the case.

In June, footage allegedly showed the household’s 100-pound dog attacking Jamaria while Tyshael Martin encouraged the attack.

The video reportedly shows Jamaria lying motionless outside before Martin dragged her back inside the home.

What happened next, investigators say, was further abuse.

Authorities confirmed that multiple reports were made to DCF regarding concerns for the children living in the home.

Each report represented a chance to intervene.

Each report represented a chance to save a life.

After Martin and LoJuan Session ended their relationship, Jamaria remained in Martin’s care.

Investigators say that is when the abuse intensified even further.

According to court documents, Jamaria was allegedly beaten, kicked, punched, struck with objects, and subjected to prolonged physical punishment.

She was reportedly forced to run on a treadmill.

She was reportedly forced to squat against a wall for extended periods.

Punishments designed not to discipline, but to break.

Court records also reveal a detail that has stunned many following the case.

Martin later took the children on a cruise with other family members.

LoJuan Session did not attend, reportedly because he was involved in an affair that resulted in another pregnancy.

Authorities say Jamaria was abused during the cruise and falsely accused of misbehavior as justification for punishment.

Even surrounded by extended family.

Even in public spaces.

Jamaria was not protected.

On June 17, 2023, Jamaria was found unresponsive inside the home.

She was rushed to an area hospital, where doctors could not save her.

Medical findings revealed extensive abrasions and bruises across her body, many in different stages of healing.

Her death was ruled the result of multiple blunt force injuries to her head, torso, and extremities.

She also suffered a thermal injury to her foot.

The injuries told a story her voice never had the chance to finish.

Tyshael Elise Martin, 34, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and child neglect.

On August 30, 2024, Jamaria’s father, LoJuan Session, was also arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child.

Florida prosecutors have now announced they are seeking the death penalty against Martin.

It is a rare and severe step, reflecting the brutality of the case and the depth of public outrage.

Yet even as the legal system moves forward, the larger questions remain.

How many warnings were missed before Jamaria Sessions lost her life?

How many reports were minimized or dismissed?

How many adults saw signs of danger and assumed someone else would step in?

Jamaria Sessions was not invisible.

She was a child seen by teachers, doctors, family members, and state agencies.

She was reported.

She was hospitalized.

She was documented.

And still, she was not saved.

Jamaria deserved protection.

She deserved safety.

She deserved love.

Her life mattered long before her death made headlines.

Her suffering should never have happened.

And her death now demands accountability not only from those charged, but from every system that failed to stop the violence while there was still time.
